Foundations settles for many reasons. Plasticity of the soil, weak bearing soil, poor drainage and so many more. Water must never pond around your foundation.
The soil around the foundation must always shed water away from the structure. I always say, to fix a foundation problem you must first fix the drainage. Water is the enemy. You are only trying to prevent your structure from direct hit or the water. Water can wash out around foundation supports, but it can also cause the foundation fills to escape and shrink beneath the slab, damaging the foundation.
Also, if there is too much moisture in the soil (continuos ponding of water), it can reach a saturated point where it will no longer support the weight above it.

Here's a video to show you how water damage your foundation. The whitish brown soil inside the water are foundation fills escaping into the waters.
