Take note of the following during flash flood which is often caused by excessive rainfall in a short period of time, generally less than six hours.
1. Monitor the water level in your compound. Install a peg and mark with a red tape or paint to monitor the water rise.
2. Measure the level of water from the natural ground level to the new water level during the heavy downpour to determine the increment rate per hour.
3. Identify the cause of flooding if it is something that is happening to you for the first time. Check if there are newly built walls obstructing flow, blocked drainage, surface water runoff due to heavy downpour or if it's sign of a nearby river overflow.
4. Raise the compound floor 2 to 3 times the height of the new level to keep your building safe during continuous downpour.
5. Waterproof your foundation to about 12 to 18in into your superstructure with water sealing solution. Forget the common "Increase The Height" solution, you're only imposing more loads. Concrete is not a non-permeable material.
6. Install a perimeter drainage within your compound with properly sized water outlet. I'll share an example later here. Most people don't really get this part. And where necessary flood proof your entrances.
7. Spread the "Clean The Drainage" News.
8. Ensure you install weep holes above the new flood level behind retaining walls and fences to keep the water level at "K"
